As the calendar turns to 2026, a stillness descends upon ATRA – not one of conclusion, but of transition. For decades, Rodger and Diane Bland, you have demonstrated your devotion, shared purpose, and unwavering commitment to this industry. As you enter retirement, you stand at the end of a chapter and start a new one.
This is a tribute as we reflect on the enduring meaning you have contributed to countless lives. This is your story – a testament to the fact that success is not measured by balance sheets but by the echoes left behind. Your lives prove the power of a covenant between two people with a shared, deep-seated vision, not to mention, a few stories along the way.
Your personal and professional journey is linked to the pulse of the automatic transmission industry. We, your colleagues, vividly recall the dedicated and earnest spirit of those early days at ATRA. Rodger first walked through the door in November 1995 as Production Director, having moved from a front-end manager at a shop to the endeavor of GEARS Magazine. In 1999, the Technical Department was little more than a warehouse office, with my desk under the stairs of Dennis Madden’s office, surrounded by technical books, the aroma of coffee, and the constant hum of work. The technical guys move in and out of makeshift offices, copying pages from manuals and dropping them into a fax machine for immediate delivery to technicians in their respective shops. It was a time of dedicated effort combined with the passion that drove the entire organization, eventually culminating with the move to Oxnard, California, where we all finally worked under one unified roof.
That environment was where our professional partnership was forged. You were two individuals drawn together by an intrinsic belief in conscientiousness, deep integrity, and the enduring certainty that one could truly reshape the world around them. Rodger brought the deep, intuitive foresight, seeing beyond the immediate horizon and mapping the rugged terrain ahead with quiet certainty. Diane brought her grounded resilience, meticulous care for the association, and intuitive understanding of human connection, turning colleagues into family and clients into loyal advocates. Together, your chemistry transformed our vision into enduring, tangible results.
In 2001, Rodger’s ability to filter the vital from the noise earned him the critical role of Managing Editor of GEARS Magazine. Yet, that title, however prestigious, doesn’t capture the sheer breadth of the man. He would often be described as a “successologist” (not a real word, but it sounds cool). Rodger is a master of transference – one who takes raw information and refines it, ensuring it is not only important and valuable but, inspired.
As he often demonstrated and said, “Information without inspiration is like a Ferrari without fuel. Nice to sit in and safe, but it will take you nowhere.” He didn’t just talk; he lived the inspiration. He helped create, implement, and drive the development of crucial programs like What’s Working, ATRA’s seminal industry study, and business management program.
Rodger’s life has been a constant demonstration of devotion in every facet: a beloved husband, father, and grandfather; a dedicated coach; a master presenter who shared his vision with audiences globally; a voice of enthusiasm as a play-by-play announcer for Greyhounds football for over 30 years; a rodeo announcer; an avid hiker who finds peace in vertical challenges; and a friend to countless members of our industry. His unwavering dedication was the visible manifestation of a deeply held belief that every day was a fresh opportunity to push the boundaries of what meaning, having its roots in his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.
But as any lifelong builder knows, the visible scaffolding is only half the structure. The true integrity of the work lies in the unseen support. That’s the realm of Diane Bland. I’ve known Diane as long as I’ve known Rodger, one thing that defines their lives together is unshakeable love. You won’t find Diane on social channels or business bios. She’s, quite literally, the indispensable glue behind the scenes that holds countless projects together. Single-handedly, or shoulder-to-shoulder with Rodger, she has managed the complexity of GEARS production, masterfully orchestrated the EXPO show floor logistics, managed the delicate relationships with countless EXPO presenters and vendors, and ensured the show management ran flawlessly. Diane’s contribution, perhaps less visible on the organizational charts but infinitely more powerful in the bedrock of our culture, was the living embodiment of our ethical center. She navigated complex challenges with an empathy that disarmed conflict and forged unbreakable alliances, proving that a business built on sincerity and mutual admiration can withstand any economic storm. Her legacy is woven into the very fabric of countless careers she personally elevated and guided, all through quiet strength and commitment.
Rodger and Diane, your story transcends your professional accomplishments. It resides in the unwavering portrait of partnership. In an era where dedication was often fractured, your covenant remained whole. You learned to fight for each other’s visions, to challenge each other’s assumptions with grace, and to always, always return to the core truth: that the whole is greater than its parts. Your synergy was the quiet, powerful engine of every major triumph. You taught your family, your team, and your peers that building an enduring legacy requires a powerful, supportive partner standing shoulder-to-shoulder with you, sharing both the joys on the peak and emotional burdens in the valley.
Rodger has devoted his life to understanding the depth of human achievement. He’s stated, “We observe that even the most accomplished individuals seldom, if ever, realize their true, full potential in life. Instead, we all temporarily accept a level of underachievement with which we can justify and live. And thank God for that! Imagine a world without the constant, fervent pursuit of living life to its fullest – there would be no advancement, no purpose or meaning. We truly are what we think about, and all our limitations are self-imposed. The keys to our fulfillment lie in the information we gather, and how we transfer that information into useful, inspired knowledge and action.”
For you, retiring in January 2026 is not an exercise in slowing down, but in profoundly redirecting your passion. It is the conscious, deeply felt choice to step away from the daily demands of operations and dedicate your accumulated wisdom and quiet energy to a deeper level of community service and mentorship. You are exchanging the boardroom for the outdoor classroom, the quarterly report for enjoying the travels, actively choosing to pursue a new, even higher potential in the next chapter of your lives. You carry no regrets about the effort expended, for every late night and difficult decision was a heartfelt investment in the lives of those you employed and served.
To those who look to the horizon with uncertainty, we at ATRA proudly offer this encouraging promise, which is exemplified by your lives, “The journey is the reward. You do not need to wait for a title or a corner office to begin building your legacy. Start today, in the smallest interaction, by prioritizing integrity over convenience, and courage over fear. Be the person who lifts others up, who asks the challenging question, and who stands firm in their values. The world is built by people who refuse to accept the status quo. Be one of them.”
Your retirement marks the end of an era, but the foundation remains. You leave behind a team, a company, and a community strengthened by a decades-long commitment to excellence and guided by the principles of Rodger’s intuitive leadership and Diane’s empathetic stability. I look forward to following your new season—a time for travel, deeper reflection, writing the next great chapter of your lives, and finding new avenues to inspire the next generation and beyond. The adventure continues.
Rog- Di~, I love you guys to the moon! I look forward to telling more stories at the kitchen table over brisket tacos and near beer.
