Welcome to the 2026 Powertrain EXPO in San Antonio, TX! Each year, EXPO gives us a chance to come together as an industry—to learn, connect, and prepare for the opportunities ahead. Last year’s event was a strong success, and this year’s EXPO is shaping up to be even better. You asked for a jump-start to help improve and grow your business, and your association is ready to deliver the strongest technical and management training in the transmission industry. After a full year of preparation, the expanded Trade Show floor is SOLD OUT, with many new and returning vendors. Attendees will also have access to 57 hours of combined technical and management training, featuring several new speakers alongside some of your industry favorites.
We recently transferred more than 40 years of technical information into a new database that will support the redesigned websites. To improve performance and usability, we are introducing AI tools to help you find the information you need more quickly. The members’ area has also been completely redesigned to provide a better overall experience.
Over the past year, ATRA has continued to rebuild and grow the association following our relocation from California. With our newly remodeled 15,000-square-foot facility now in place, we are preparing to host the first of many in-person, on-site training classes. These sessions will offer both classroom instruction and hands-on training across a range of topics, with content tailored to each technician’s skill level—from foundational training for new transmission technicians, installers, and rebuilders to advanced instruction on the latest electronic transmissions and computer control systems. Our goal is to help shops train and staff their teams successfully and profitably.
You are invited to attend the TTAC (Technician Training Advisory Council) meeting on Friday afternoon; please check onsite for the specific location. TTAC is a collaborative group of experienced shop owners, rebuilders, and industry professionals whose mission is to help ATRA shape real-world, industry-aligned training curriculum that prepares the next generation of transmission technicians for long-term success. At nearly every seminar I attend, I ask who is looking to hire a technician—and nearly every hand goes up. The need is clear: we must train new technicians and keep current technicians up to date on the latest technology. TTAC gives you an opportunity to be part of that effort.
This year, we have also been offering two-day seminars, and I hope you have been able to attend one in your area. On Friday, we provide three hours of focused training; this year’s topic was hydraulics. On Saturday, we deliver a full day of transmission-specific diagnostics and repair training. We are also planning future three-day seminars to give members additional training options when traveling to EXPO is not possible.
Last year, we merged VTS Training with FUEL Inc., an expansive library of management and personal development courses. This year, we are also featuring a speaker from Shop-Fix, which offers extensive management and technical training. We believe ongoing training and networking with other shop owners are essential, and ATRA is working hard to provide opportunities that help you grow—whether you are a technician, manager, or owner. I look forward to seeing you at EXPO and spending time with you in San Antonio.
For me, the conversations after the meetings are always one of the best parts of attending. Nothing compares to connecting with your peers, sharing ideas, and building relationships that can last for years. The Marriott Rivercenter on the River Walk is an excellent setting for those conversations, and sometimes all it takes is a simple introduction: “Hi, my name is Dave. Where is your shop located?” I hope you will take full advantage of the training, the trade show, and the opportunity to connect with others who care deeply about this industry. Welcome to San Antonio!
