“Quality is not an act; it is a habit.” – Aristotle.
In the heart of California’s picturesque Placerville, where the rolling hills hide small ranches, a transmission repair shop stands as a testament to a lifelong dedication to the automotive craft. Placerville Transmission, owned and operated by Adolf Zierke, is not just a place that fixes transmissions; it’s a place where expertise, hard work, and a commitment to quality come together.
Adolf’s journey into the transmission world started at the tender age of eight – an age when most kids are just learning basic math. Growing up in the transmission business was second nature to him. His father, Daryle, had been working on Hydramatics and manual transmissions since the early 1950s in Danville, California. When Adolf was just four years old, his family moved to Placerville, where he practically grew up in the shop. By the time he was eight, he was already removing and reinstalling transmissions, putting shift kits in valve bodies, and tearing down and cleaning up transmissions.
While in the third grade, as exhaustion weighed heavy on Adolf’s young shoulders, a curious teacher noticed something amiss. The tired boy, struggling to stay awake in class, revealed his late-night ordeal, explaining that he had been awake until the early morning. The teacher’s shock turned to anger as she learned that his father had kept him working late.
However, a fascinating twist of fate was just around the corner. Adolf, who had spent countless hours with his father around mechanical tools and parts, effortlessly excelled during a fractions lesson. His response was unexpected when the teacher asked how he managed to grasp such mathematical concepts so quickly. He attributed his understanding of fractions to his seemingly unrelated knowledge of wrench sizes.
At that moment, the teacher gained a newfound appreciation for his father’s unconventional approach to education and saw a budding genius with a unique perspective on learning.
His father’s passion for transmissions extended to his son, and in 1976, they purchased the land where the shop stands today. Adolf’s graduation from high school marked the beginning of his commitment to building his own legacy. With a strong work ethic instilled by his father, they constructed the shop from the ground up, even hauling dirt at night to see their dream come to fruition.
Placerville Transmission officially opened its doors in August 1991, with Adolf and his father working tirelessly from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. However, as time passed, the father and son had different visions for the business. While his father believed in working endless hours, Adolf sought a different path – one where he worked to live rather than living to work.
In 1995, his father retired, leaving the shop in Adolf’s capable hands. He made significant changes, like acquiring hoists and accepting credit cards, which profoundly impacted the business’s growth. He also expanded the shop to double its size to accommodate more mechanics and produce more work.
Let’s delve deeper into the staff that make the business operations possible at Placerville Transmission:
Adolf Zierke is the heart and soul of Placerville Transmission. As I mentioned, his journey into the world of transmissions began at a remarkably early age, and he dedicated his life to honing his skills and knowledge in the automotive industry. Adolf’s commitment to excellence, tireless work ethic, and determination to provide top-notch service drive the shop’s success. He not only manages the shop but also ensures that it operates with the highest standards of quality and precision.
Jo Rasmussen plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of Placerville Transmission. With 13 years of dedicated service, she’s the face of the shop, handling administrative tasks and managing the front office. Her professionalism and organizational skills keep everything running smoothly, from customer interactions to parts management. Jo is the friendly voice on the phone and the welcoming presence when customers walk through the door.
Kris Olson, who also happens to be Adolf’s best friend, is yet another indispensable member of the Placerville Transmission team. Hired initially as an R&R technician, it didn’t take long for Kris to demonstrate his exceptional skills, leading him to quickly become a transmission rebuilder. His keen attention to detail and expertise in the intricacies of transmission rebuilding have been instrumental in maintaining the shop’s reputation for quality workmanship. Adolf affirmed Kris’s diligence, “Once he found a hairline crack in a piston that I know would have gotten past me.”
Adolf’s brother, Paul Zierke, has been a steady presence at Placerville Transmission since its inception. As an R&R technician, he’s played a vital role in the shop’s operations. Paul’s loyalty and dedication to the business have made him an essential team member, providing reliable support, and ensuring that the shop’s services meet the highest standards.
The team at Placerville Transmission is more than just a group of employees. They’re a close-knit family united by a shared passion for automotive excellence. Each team member contributes unique skills and dedication, ensuring that the shop thrives and upholds its legacy of providing top-tier transmission services to the Placerville community.
Placerville Transmission is more than just a me-too” business. It’s a company where excellence is the norm. Adolf’s dedication to learning is evident, as he continually stays up to date with the latest technology and industry trends. His father’s motto, “If you don’t have the time to do it right the first time, how are you going to find the time to do it again,” reflects the shop’s commitment to quality and precision.
An example of this commitment occurred in 1994 when Adolf faced a perplexing challenge with a 1991 Pathfinder’s transmission. Struggling to diagnose the issue, he turned to ATRA’s tech support, specifically reaching out to Dennis Madden. They discovered an unexpected culprit through their collaboration – an AC issue rather than the anticipated DC issue. With sharp critical thinking and replacing the PWM solenoid, the transmission was swiftly restored to its optimal condition.
This pivotal experience marked the beginning of Adolf’s deep trust in and ongoing interaction with the valuable connections he established within the ATRA community. It’s worth noting that this year, Placerville Transmission was proudly the first shop to sign up for the ATRA Expo, highlighting its commitment to staying at the forefront of industry knowledge and technology.
As Placerville Transmission continues to serve the community, Adolf Zierke is not only looking back on the legacy he’s built but also looking forward to the future. With retirement on the horizon, he’s exploring options for someone to take over the shop while ensuring that the legacy he’s nurtured continues to thrive.
Placerville Transmission is a beacon of integrity and dedication in a world where speed often takes precedence over quality. Adolf and his team prioritize doing the job right the first time, emphasizing communication, education, and a promise of quality that keeps customers coming back.
Adolf’s early habits, cultivated by working diligently at such a tender age, have woven a legacy steeped in firm dedication. As Placerville Transmission embarks on its future journey, it carries with it the legacy of excellence born from habitual hard work and a genuine love for the automotive craft.
