“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower
There’s a certain kind of loyalty found in places like Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It’s the kind that’s built on hard work, honest talk, and a little grease. If you’ve ever had a transmission problem anywhere near this city, chances are you’ve heard of Badger Transmissions.
For Scott Steldt, the man behind the name, this line of work isn’t something he stumbled into; it’s something he was born into. His story runs through three generations of transmission men who believed in doing things right, no matter how long it took or how messy it got.
Scott grew up around the hum of tools and the smell of transmission fluid. His grandfather was in the transmission business, and his father ran a shop of his own. “I grew up in this industry,” Scott says with pride.
By the time he graduated high school in 1986, he already knew what he wanted to do. Just a year later, in 1987, he opened his own shop where his dad joined him as a partner. “We were a two-man operation back then,” he recalls. The two of them worked side by side for more than three decades. In 2019, Scott’s dad decided to retire, though his influence still lingers in every rebuilt unit that leaves the shop. “He’s the reason I’m here,” Scott says simply. “I’ll never forget that.”
What started as a small operation steadily grew into something much larger. The shop has become the city’s go-to name for drivetrain repair for nearly every type of vehicle imaginable. “We work on everything,” Scott says proudly. “classic cars, hot rods, high performance, and heavy duty, commercial vehicles, box trucks, school buses, even a few marine transmissions. If it’s got a drivetrain, we’ll take a look at it.” That range of work has become part of Badger’s identity. From a 1968 Chevelle on the lift to a modern delivery van or a city bus differential, there’s no telling what might roll through the doors next.
Scott still spends plenty of time in the shop, working on manual transmissions, differentials, and the “odd-ball” units that most techs steer clear of. His wife, Debbie, oversees payroll and bookkeeping, while his daughter-in-law, Morgan, manages the marketing and social media. His son, Scott Jr. is the 4th generation head builder, and has great plans for Badger’s future and also helps run the front office as service advisor, roles he’s earned after sixteen years in the trade.
The rest of the team includes Jessie in the office, Mike building units, along with Anthony, Scott B., and Max handling R&R. This crew operates with a sense of unity that’s easy to spot.
Their mission statement says it all: “To provide honest, expert transmission repair with craftsmanship. We are proud to treat every customer like family and every vehicle as our own.”
Scott has spent his career working to overcome the bad reputation that careless shops have given the transmission industry. His approach has always been to consistently stay honest, deliver quality work, and treat customers with respect.
“The hardest part to overcoming the industry’s negative reputation is building trust,” he explains. “People walk in already nervous, already unsure. We earn their trust by being honest – every time.”
That straightforward approach has paid off in ways that advertising never could. In the early years, Scott invested heavily in traditional advertising including radio spots, print ads, phone book listings. About twenty years ago, though, he decided to pull back. “I backed off the advertising,” he says. “I noticed our numbers actually went up.” He continues, “Word spreads like wildfire. People talk. You do good work, you treat folks right, and next thing you know, their cousin and their neighbor and their co-worker are calling you.”
Today, the shop relies mainly on their excellent reputation. While Morgan keeps our name current online, most customers still come through referrals. The consistency of that word-of-mouth business is proof that craftsmanship and integrity are still the best marketing tools around.
Scott knows that transmission repairs often come with sticker shock, and he doesn’t shy away from those conversations. “Sticker shock is real,” he says. “People hear a number and their eyes get big. Once you take the time to explain what goes into it – the parts, the labor, the precision – they start to get it.” Clear, direct communication has become a cornerstone of the shop’s philosophy. Every customer receives a full explanation of the repair process and the work performed, ensuring they leave with confidence instead of confusion.
Technology in the transmission world has changed more in the last twenty years than in the fifty years before it. Between computer-controlled systems, CVTs, and complex electronics, many shops have narrowed their focus. Badger Transmissions, however, continues to embrace both old and new. Scott still enjoys building manual transmissions and differentials and tackling those unusual jobs that others won’t touch. It’s where his passion for the trade began, and where it still lives.
Badger Transmissions has been an ATRA member for over 30 years, a point of pride for Scott and his team. “ATRA keeps us connected,” he says. “It’s about professionalism, support, and raising the standard for this industry.” Through ATRA’s network, customers know they’re covered, not just in Milwaukee, but wherever the road takes them. That level of trust mirrors the values the Steldt family business.
As Scott looks to the future, he sees his father’s influence everywhere: in the workmanship, the customer relationships, and the family dynamic that defines the shop. “My dad and I did this together for over 30 years,” he says. “He retired in 2019, though he still checks in. I think he likes seeing how far it’s come.”
Generations of Milwaukee families have relied on Badger Transmissions, many of the children and grandchildren of long-time customers returning decades later with vehicles of their own. It’s the kind of loyalty that can’t be bought or faked – it’s earned, one rebuild, one relationship at a time.
For the Steldt family, Badger Transmissions has never been just a business – it’s a reflection of the values they live by. Leadership here has always meant integrity first; from the way customers are treated to the way every transmission is rebuilt. In an industry shaped by change, that steady commitment to honesty and craftsmanship has become their greatest strength, proving that doing the right thing stands the test of time.
Have you ever wondered how shops are chosen for this column? We know there are many deserving ATRA shops out there – you might be one of them. Sometimes, we hear about shops and their unique stories through the grapevine. However, most of the time, we end up being detectives. We ask our industry contacts for recommendations, and then we contact the shops they’ve suggested.
You’re invited to tell us about an ATRA shop that you think has an interesting story to tell – maybe your own shop. There’s no cost. It just takes about an hour for a telephone interview and a visit by our photographer. We’ll do all the heavy lifting. To get the ball rolling, send an email to Aurelio at APena@atra.com.
